Sunshine and cool temperatures tantalized racers at this past weekend’s NHRA GatorNationals, March 14-16, as Steve Harker’s Speed City-CAM2 Monte Carlo revved up the Top Alcohol Funny Car class making it all the way to the Semi-Finals.
Qualifying in the number 5 position, Harker a long time veteran of the alcohol class made two out of three solid qualifying runs of 5.64et and 5.54et to face number 12 qualifier, Tony Bogolo in the first round.
The last pair of funny cars to face off under the lights on Saturday night, Harker and Bogolo went head to head in their first round eliminations. Harker turning on the win light with the quickest et of the round, 5.52et at 263mph. Bogolo made a strong run of 5.63et at 258mph making for a close race against Harker.
Sunday eliminations paired Harker against Division Seven Champion, Annie Whiteley. Both Harker and Whiteley had the two quickest runs of the previous round setting up this quarter-final match up as the one to watch. Harker took the start line advantage and never looked back as Whiteley struggled with tire smoke and a broken throttle cable. Harker once again laid down the quickest run of the session, 5.58et at 262.03mph.
Going into the semi-finals Harker’s luck began to turn as they struggled with a dropped cylinder and no oil pressure at startup. The Speed City-CAM2 team faced firing the car twice and following through on a short burn out procedure. Thankful for fellow competitor Dan Pomponio’s patience, both cars were able to take the green but it would Pomponio who would truck on through for the round win with a 5.63et. Harker’s car never recovered the drop cyclinder and was unable to make a full pass having to lift by half-track and coasting his way across the finish line.
“We are so pumped by our team’s performance here this weekend. I have to thank Nick Bastio for his tuning and crew assistance. Nick is a smart kid and we were so pleased to have his support and knowledge backing us. It was a great weekend for us and for our sponsors, CAM2, Speed City, NGK and Hedman Hedders. We love using their products on our car and we see the difference it makes using these quality products every time the car goes down the track. It’s back to Georgia to regroup and get ready for our first Regional Event.” Said Steve.
Harker and team look forward to taking on the East Coast Regional event in Richmond, VA, April 4-6. For more information about Steve Harker, CAM2, Speed City, NGK Spark Plugs or Hedman Hedders check out www.speedcityracing.com.
