What a year it has been for Australian transplant's Steve and Jenelle Harker, who made the return to NHRA Drag Racing at the end of last season after a two-year break from the sport. The Harker's set their goals on making 2014 a test season with no consideration of competing for the championship. Maybe it was the lack of pressure but all was about to change for the Speed City, CAM2 Oils sponsored team as the second half of the year soon found Harker going head to head for a chance at the title.
As this past weekends season ending event, The Auto Club Finals in Pomona, CA is now officially in the history books, Steve and Jenelle will be able to reflect on the season that was more than a career best but a part of history. Harker became the first drive in the NHRA Top Alcohol Class to win five national events in a row and also the first non-north American to win a class championship. Harker walked away with national event victories in Norwalk, OH, Dallas, Tx, Charlotte, NC, Reading, PA, Las Vegas, NV and Pomona, CA.
Not only did Harker secure the national title he walked away with his fifth regional championship and first in the North Central Region. After scoring only two wins this year at the regional level in St Louis and Bowling Green Harker was able to seal the deal with two runner-ups and a semi final finish.
Impressive round win victories were complemented with career best et and mph runs. Harker became the third quickest driver in the class when he laid down a 5.483et earlier this season at the NHRA Nationals in Reading, PA. Not to forget the power packed mph from the Leander’s Clutch driven Monte Carlo reaching speeds up to 266mph+ throughout the season, another class achievement.
2014 has been a year for the history books in many of the NHRA classes but none will come close to performance and side-by-side nail biting action that was Top Alcohol Funny Car. For Steve and wife Jenelle, it will have been their year; a year that bought two championship titles cementing their names and passion to the sport of drag racing.
Harker currently holds two ANDRA Top Bike Championships, crew chief of the 2012 FIA European Top Methanol Funny Car Champion, Five NHRA Regional Championships and finally the 2014 NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car World Championship title.
Congratulations to Steve, Jenelle and their many crew for an outstanding career!
Many thanks also to CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Motor Oils, Leanders Clutch, NGK Spark Plugs, Crane Trucking and Mitsuboshi Belting Ltd.
